RGB (Red, Green, Blue) is the color model used by screens, monitors, cameras, and televisions. It works by combining emitted light, which means it can generate very bright, saturated colors that exceed what physical inks can reproduce. CMYK works by subtracting light through ink pigments layered on a surface. The gamut, or the range of colors it can produce, is smaller than RGB.
Is it better to print in RGB or CMYK? For physical printing, CMYK is the correct choice. If you submit an RGB file, the printer's RIP (raster image processor) converts it to CMYK automatically, and that automatic conversion does not always match your intent. Colors that looked vivid on screen can come out muted, shifted in hue, or inconsistent with your brand standards.
The practical answer is to
design banners in CMYK mode from the beginning. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign all let you select CMYK as your document color mode at the start of a project. Is CMYK still used? Absolutely. Despite the growth of digital displays, CMYK is the industry-standard color model for every type of physical print production, including banners, signage, packaging, and publications. It is not going away. Every printer, from a desktop inkjet to a wide-format commercial press, ultimately applies CMYK inks (or close equivalents) to a substrate.
