Every banner we produce is custom-printed on one of five core materials. Each substrate is engineered for specific conditions, so understanding the differences lets you order with confidence rather than guessing.
13 oz Vinyl BannerThis is the most widely used banner material in commercial printing. At 13 oz per square yard,
scrim-reinforced PVC vinyl balances affordability, print quality, and outdoor durability in a single product. UV-cured eco-solvent ink bonds to the surface and resists scratching and water exposure — our step-by-step guide on
how vinyl banners are printed walks through the full process. The standard finish is matte for low glare, though a gloss option is available for high-shine logos and photographic images. Expect 3-5 years of outdoor life with proper installation, and longer performance in covered or indoor locations. Size range runs from 12 inches x 12 inches up to 16 ft x 50 ft.
18 oz Blockout Vinyl BannerBanners.com describes the 18 oz blockout as "our toughest banner material," and the specs back that up. The extra weight comes from a thicker PVC construction and an opaque blockout core layer that prevents light from passing through the material. This is the only vinyl substrate that supports true double-sided printing without ghosting. It also delivers meaningfully better tear resistance and abrasion resistance compared to 13 oz — see
how long outdoor banners last for lifespan expectations by material and mounting method. Best suited for permanent or long-run outdoor installs, pole-mounted street banners, and any banner in a high-traffic area where it may be bumped, brushed, or rubbed regularly.
Mesh Vinyl BannerMesh is 8 oz PVC-coated polyester with perforations across the surface. Those perforations allow approximately 37% airflow, which dramatically reduces wind load on large-format installs. The tradeoff is that the open weave produces a slightly lower color density than solid vinyl substrates. For fence wraps, construction-site barriers, stadium perimeter advertising, and any large banner exposed to sustained wind, mesh is the purpose-built choice — our
outdoor mesh banner guide covers wind resistance in detail. Size range extends to 50 ft x 16 ft, and outdoor lifespan runs up to 2 years with proper installation.
Soft Polyester Fabric BannerFabric banners are printed on a soft woven polyester substrate with a matte, low-glare finish. The material drapes naturally and eliminates the plastic sheen you get from vinyl, which makes it the preferred choice for trade-show backdrops, retail in-store displays, and event entrance signage where professional appearance at close viewing distance matters. Standard sizes run up to approximately 4.8 ft x 20 ft on stock SKUs, with larger custom sizes available. Fabric banners are an indoor product; they are not rated for extended outdoor exposure.
Adhesive Vinyl
Adhesive vinyl is a pressure-sensitive substrate with a matte laminate, UV-resistant, scratch-resistant printed face and a peel-and-stick backing. It installs directly on flat surfaces including windows, walls, and smooth painted surfaces without any additional hardware. Available in standard and extreme-tack versions, both rated 3-5 years outdoors. Size range goes up to 120 inches wide by 52 inches high. Adhesive vinyl is the fastest-mounting option for storefronts, retail windows, office branding, and event pop-up installations.
